NEW YORK — New York City police are involved in a standoff with a suspect in the 2010 killing of a Pace University student.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says a squad went to arrest the man Wednesday on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, and he refused to come out of an apartment.

Police believe two children and the man’s mother are inside and are treating it as a hostage situation. It isn’t clear whether the man is armed.

An officer at the scene says police are talking to the man. Police set up a large inflated device outside, the kind used when someone might fall or be pushed out of a higher floor.

The street and sidewalk were closed. Dozens of onlookers gawked.

Authorities say the student sold marijuana at an apartment in Manhattan’s financial district.
