CONROE, Texas — A Texas man recieved a 15-year sentence after leading a police pursuit that left an officer and 11-year-old boy dead.
The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Garrett William Nee, 30, was sentenced Tuesday on four felony charges stemming from the deaths of Officer Stacey Baumgartner, 39, and 11-year-old Adan Hilario Jr.
“This was a very difficult case,” Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Tyler Dunman said. “This case was unique in that it had a death of a police officer and the death of a child, so it was a very emotionally charged case from both ends.”
The incident occurred on Father’s Day, June 19, 2016, after police received a call about a suspect urinating in public and exposing himself. Baumgartner responded and spoke to Nee before returning to his vehicle.
Nee reversed and nearly struck Baumgartner’s patrol car and fled the scene. A high-speed pursuit ensued.
When both drivers approached an intersection, the suspect cleared it but Baumgartner collided with a vehicle occupied by Hilaro’s family. The officer’s vehicle was pushed into a traffic pole.
Hilaro was pronounced dead at the scene. Baumgartner was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officer left behind his wife and young daughter.
Nee was found guilty on Friday.
