PARMA, Ohio — A Cleveland man accused of dragging a Brooklyn police officer with his car as he sped away from a traffic stop appeared for the first time Friday in municipal court.

Jose A. Camacho, 33, is charged with felonious assault on a police officer, a first-degree felony, in the Thursday incident on Ridge Road near Hammond Avenue.

The police officer suffered a dislocated shoulder and was taken to MetroHealth for treatment, police said.

Camacho waived his right to a preliminary hearing during his appearance Friday in Parma Municipal Court. His case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Judge Kenneth Spanagel said in a phone call after the hearing that he set Camacho’s bond at $100,000.

The officer stopped Camacho’s 2000 Honda Accord just after noon for an undisclosed traffic violation. Camacho started to drive away while the officer was standing beside the car, police said.

The officer became trapped in the driver’s compartment as the car sped away, police said.

The Brooklyn Police Department released photos and body camera video hours after the incident. Camacho turned himself in about 9:30 p.m. at a Cleveland police station, police said.

Camacho’s criminal history includes prior convictions for drug trafficking, drug possession and breaking and entering, according to Cuyahoga County court records.
