MARIETTA, Ga. — Recently released video shows a Georgia officer being dragged by a suspect’s car for more than a mile while the man tossed guns out of his vehicle.
On Thursday, Officer Brian Wallace pulled over a vehicle for a moving violation and noticed that the driver’s body language seemed “odd,” the Ledger Enquirer reports. Wallace asked the driver to exit the vehicle and called for backup. But as the backup officer walked towards the car, police said the driver tried to get back into the vehicle.
During the ensuing struggle, a passenger put the car in drive and hit the gas, dragging Wallace for more than a mile at speeds as high as 71 mph. Wallace was trapped between the door and the driver’s seat while the vehicle swerved in heavy traffic and traveled on rough, muddy roads.
Wallace was eventually able to close the door to avoid being thrown out before the car came to a stop. A suspect fled the scene and was arrested. A K-9 later found two handguns that were tossed out during the incident.
Police said the three suspects involved were gang members from Massachusetts. Marietta Chief Dan Flynn said he “could not be more prouder” of the officers who were involved.
“Because they are so highly trained, self-disciplined and well-coordinated they were able to end this extremely dangerous situation without anyone being injured or killed; officer or suspects,” Flynn said in a news release.
All three suspects face several charges, including kidnapping and assault.
