SALT LAKE CITY — Recently released dash cam footage shows a Utah trooper going airborne after he was struck from behind by a careening car.

On Sunday, Sgt. Cade Brenchley was walking towards a car that slid off the snowy highway when he was struck by a sliding vehicle, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. Brenchley said he recalls exiting his vehicle before everything went “black.”

“It felt like a weird dream,” Brenchley said.

Several passerby, including the driver who hit him, stopped to help and render aid to the injured trooper. Brenchley suffered four broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and road rash on his face.

At a Tuesday news conference, the trooper said the road he was on was “very slick, slushy,” and that people driving in those conditions should slow down.

“We’ve got to pay attention to what’s going on around us,” Brenchley said. “When there’s snow on the road, you just need to check your ego and slow down, to be perfectly frank. Be patient. Be courteous.”

Despite his injuries, the trooper said he holds “no ill will” towards the driver who hit him. The driver, a college-age woman, has since apologized to Brenchley and visited him at the hospital.

Brenchley is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Deseret News.
