Mastering tactical skills: Female officers train at ‘Back the Women in Blue’ event

A Girl & A Gun’s flagship training program featured live-fire drills, breaching techniques and rappelling to prepare officers for real-world challenges

ROUND ROCK, Texas — A Girl & A Gun (AG & AG), a national organization empowering women through firearms education, competition, and community, hosted 22 female law enforcement officers for the 8th Annual “Back the Women in Blue” event.

Sponsored by GLOCK, with ammunition provided by Aguila Ammo, the three-day training took place November 13-15, 2024, at the Round Rock Public Safety Training Center. The event united officers from 11 states, representing county, municipal, and tribal agencies, and celebrated their commitment to serving their communities with skill and courage. Each participant was nominated by a member of her community, making the event both a professional and personal milestone.

Officer Anna Nix from Georgetown (Texas) Police Department enjoyed the live-fire training with ammunition sponsored by Aguila Ammo. She said, “It was awesome to attend a training where we got to uplift each other as women in LE but were also pushed to our limits and received quality, practical instruction.”

“This unique training experience celebrates and empowers female law enforcement officers,” said Robyn Sandoval, President & CEO of AG & AG. “These women serve as leaders and role models in their communities, and we are honored to provide them with the skills they need to stay safe.”

A Girl & A Gun’s ‘Back the Women in Blue’ event included a block of instruction on defensive tactics. Instructors Ashley Daley and Lana Toporek demonstrate techniques to help the officers manage street encounters.

The event featured three days of advanced training led by Sgt. Brian Quick of the Round Rock Police Department (RRPD) and a cadre of experienced instructors:

  • Day 1: Welcome from RRPD Chief Allen Banks, followed by live-fire pistol training.
  • Day 2: Instruction by Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, covering VCQB (vehicle close quarters battle), single-officer building clearing, breaching techniques and rappelling from a six-story tower.
  • Day 3: Presentation from RRPD Commander Melissa Grubbs, along with defensive tactics training.

Participants praised the event for its transformative impact. Detective Kamryn Yauger of the Moraine (Ohio) Police Department called it “an amazing training opportunity” that provided valuable skills and a supportive environment. Officer Agnieszka Motyka of the Alamogordo (New Mexico) Police Department said the instructors’ approachability and expertise created a space where “learning thrived.” St. Clair County (Michigan) Sheriff’s Deputy Brooke Goolsby described the event as a career highlight, saying, “I learned so many new techniques that I couldn’t wait to take roadside when I returned to work.”

A Girl & A Gun is a ladies-only club established by women shooters for women pistol, rifle and shotgun shooters. The organization is designed to take beginners to whatever skill level they wish to achieve and provide experienced shooters with more opportunities.
