JOHNSBURG, N.Y. — State police used a helicopter to hoist an injured hiker off a hard-to-reach area of Crane Mountain in the Adirondacks Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson said Monday.
Rangers in the Crane Mountain area who were treating the hiker’s ankle injury requested assistance from the New York State Police Aviation Unit when it became clear that the hiker wouldn’t easily be able to leave the area, said Trooper Kerra Burns with state police Troop G.
“It was just kind of an inaccessible area for her to be getting down on a busted ankle, so we went in to help,” Burns said.
In a video the NYSP posted to its Twitter page, the helicopter can be seen hovering low as the injured woman is hoisted into the air on a line. She’s carried upward and is in the air for less than 30 seconds total before someone helps her into the helicopter.

The hiker was flown to a landing zone at the base of the mountain, where she was transported by ambulance to nearby Glens Falls Hospital for treatment, Burns said.
