DENVER (AP) -- U.S. District Court Judge Edward Nottingham has ordered the city to pay $469,000 in legal fees stemming from illegal spying by police on various activist groups.
The city earlier agreed to stop the spying.
Nottingham signed an order last week requiring the city to pay the lawyer fees for the legal battle that preceded its settlement of the case.
The American Civil Liberities Union had filed suit against the city on behalf of the American Friends Service Committee and other groups and individuals, claiming the city’s Police Department unlawfully kept intelligence files on people and organizations involved in legal, peaceful protest.
Last year the city settled, agreeing to only keep files on people when there was a reasonable suspicion that they were involved in criminal activity.
