Gun Law’s ‘Safety Device’ Defined

The Washington Post

A state board that regulates handgun sales in Maryland yesterday adopted a definition of the new safety locks that are required on all handguns manufactured after Jan. 1, 2003, and sold in Maryland.

The state legislature instructed the 11-member Handgun Roster Board to come up with a definition for the “integrated mechanical safety devices” so the law requiring them can take effect.

Deputy State’s Attorney Dario Broccolino of Howard County, who represents the Maryland State’s Attorneys Association on the board, said the mechanism would be defined as “a disabling locking device that is built in the handgun, or an added after-market device installed by a Maryland-licensed gun dealer.”

A gunsmith can install the device, which requires a key, in the hammer or the trigger guard to prevent the gun’s operation, police said.
