Judge: Convicted R.I. Officer Innocent, Can Receive Lost Pay

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A police detective who spent six years in prison for a murder he did not commit can be reinstated to the Warwick police department and receive lost pay and benefits, a judge ruled Tuesday.

A hearing was set for Jan. 27 to determine how much money Jeffrey Scott Hornoff should receive.

Hornoff has said he does not want to return to police duty but sought reinstatement so he could get the pay and benefits. He was released from prison last year when another man confessed to the woman’s killing.

Hornoff was suspended from the police department without pay in 1994 after he was indicted. He was wrongly convicted in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison. The department fired Hornoff in 2000 after his conviction was upheld on appeal.
