State Police Shoot Robbery Suspect As He Runs Onto I- 75 The Associated Press

Michigan State Police shot and wounded a robbery suspect Friday as he ran away from the scene and onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 while waving a gun.

Detroit police said the suspect, whom they didn’t identify, robbed a Detroit convenience store employee of a bag with $6,000 in it and fired a shot that grazed his leg. The suspect ran away from the store, and two state troopers parked nearby on an unrelated matter spotted him, said Officer James Woods.

The troopers heard the robbery report on the radio, saw that the man running near them had a gun and began running after him, state police said.

Police said the suspect ran down an embankment and onto the southbound lanes of I-75. Woods said it appeared he may have been trying to stop cars on the highway, and when he waved the gun in the troopers’ direction, he was fired upon and hit in the groin.

State and city police would not say whether one of both of the troopers fired, nor would they identify them.

Detroit police are investigating. The suspect was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and is expected to recover.
