N.C. Police Add Extra “Eyes” on Patrol Cars

By Vanessa Welch, WTVD TV News (Raleigh-Durham, N.C.)

Catching criminals may become even easier now for Cary and Chapel Hill officers. The two police departments received thousands of dollars today. The money will be used to install digital dashboard cameras in patrol cars.

Officers hope the new device will give them the power to get more criminals off the streets.

Cameras are rolling as an out of control car barrels towards two police officers. This man gets out of his car and starts shooting at a Raleigh Police officer, again a dashboard camera caught the whole thing on tape.

Now officers in Cary and Chapel Hill are being armed with the same Eyewitness Technology. “Its a deep personal interest of mine.”

Officer Greg Almond was shot between the eyes during a traffic stop several years ago, the bullet shattered bones in his face and left him blind in one eye. “I’m thankful to be alive, there is a purpose and a plan for me god helped me get though this with my family.”

Police caught the man who shot Almond in less than a day. Having a camera like this one could have put him behind bars even sooner. “While they worked in lightning speed I have to believe that had they had this tech a dangerous man might have been off the streets sooner.”

Almond lost his sense of taste and smell and can only hear out of one ear. He’s back on the job, but off the streets, working as an investigator. Still he’s thankful these eyes will be watching as his colleagues as they fight crime every day.
