Newark, N.J. (AP) -- A 14-year-old boy who police say fled from two officers and turned toward them with a gun in his hand was in critical condition Monday with multiple gunshot wounds.

The boy, whose identity was not released by police because of his age, was admitted to University Hospital in Newark with wounds to his stomach, right arm and left shoulder, said Lt. Derek Glenn, a Newark Police spokesman.

Neither of the officers was injured, Glenn said. He said the boy has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault for pointing the gun, a 9mm Ruger, at the officers and weapons charges.

Glenn said police were called to the corner of Victoria Avenue and Garside Street about 8 a.m. Saturday on a report of someone selling drugs.

He said the boy saw police cruiser approach, then pulled the gun from his waistband and began to run. The officers ran after him, ordering him to drop the gun, but the boy refused, Glenn said.

When the boy turned toward the officers, Officer Miguel Aviles, 34, a seven-year veteran, fired once, missing him, Glenn said. The boy turned a second time, and Aviles fired three times, hitting the boy each time, Glenn said. Aviles and the second officer, Larry Llizo, 43, an 11-year veteran, were placed on administrative leave and offered counseling, Glenn said.

Glenn said the boy had three juvenile convictions.
