CHICAGO (AP) - An officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man in a police station Monday, authorities said.

Timothy Crotty, 49, who lived about two miles from the Town Hall precinct station in a trendy North Side neighborhood, was identified Monday night by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. The man entered the building about 10 a.m. and backed the officer into a corner, Chicago Police Superintendent Terry Hillard said.

“The blade was 4 inches long; the knife measured over 5 inches with the brass knuckles - something like a survival knife,” Hillard said.

“The desk sergeant and people at the desk yelled for him to drop the knife,” Hillard said. “He didn’t drop the knife. He raised the knife and rushed at the police officer.”

Police spokesman Pat Camden said the man was muttering something unintelligible when he entered the station, located just blocks from Wrigley Field.

Camden said the shot struck the man in the abdomen. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where a hospital spokeswoman said he arrived in critical condition and died at 10:48 a.m.

Camden said the department’s Office of Professional Standards is investigating the shooting.
