Pittsburgh, Penn. (AP) -- A police officer was shot during a traffic stop and police were searching for a suspect after recovering the station wagon, authorities said.

The part-time Neville Township officer was shot at twice after he pulled over the station wagon shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. At least one bullet hit the officer in the shoulder, but he was conscious, police said.

Police would not immediately release the name of the officer. The officer was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where officials would not comment on his condition.

Police found the 1986 white Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon around 7:30 a.m. Monday in Stowe Township. The engine was still running and a tire had been shot out. The station wagon had been stolen, according to police.

Township authorities provided few other details and wouldn’t say what led to the shooting.

Neville Township, commonly known as Neville Island, is on the Ohio River between Pittsburgh and McKees Rocks.
