WEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. — Rescuers in South Florida took extra precautions after a car crashed into an alligator-infested pond, WSVN reported on Friday.

As divers prepared to rescue occupants from a submerged minivan, a team of snipers assembled on the banks to protect the divers from alligators. Pictures obtained by the New York Post shows the snipers in position with their rifles pointed at the gator-infested waters.

Police and fire rescue divers responded, risking their own lives to rescue a mother and son, according to WSVN. Police later confirmed the woman survived but her son died at the hospital, the New York Post reported.

Police believe the vehicle lost control and overturned into the pond. The crash remains under investigation.
