He identified the man killed as Zachary Dunn, 29, of the Lansing area.
Officers responded about 4:20 a.m. Sept. 23 to an apartment complex in the 600 block of East Jolly Road on a report of a man with a gun banging on doors and windows.
Backus, during the press conference, said investigation following the shooting showed the phone used to make the 911 call was associated with Dunn.
He also said the gun turned out to not be real.
The video shows officers arrive and find a man, who almost immediately placed a gun to his head.
Officers repeatedly tried to get the man to drop the weapon and not shoot himself, but at some point he began running and pointed the weapon at officers.
Police then fired shots. Dunn was killed.
Michigan State Police are investigating the incident, per protocol. Six Lansing police officers are on temporary administrative leave.
“This is a tragic event. We do share our condolences with the family,” Backus said.
