ROCK HILL, Mo. — Rock Hill police Officer Matt Crosby’s wife, Stephanie, stood at his hospital bed and cried when she saw him moments after a bullet had lodged in his spine.
“Knock it off,” he told her. “I’m still alive.”
At about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, Crosby and his partner, Lt. Jordan Lewis, responded to a call for help from a woman who said her boyfriend hit her in the face with a pistol in their apartment in the 1100 block of Raritan Drive. She and her teenage daughter ran from the apartment and called police, said St. Louis County police Lt. Tom Larkin. Crosby and Lewis spotted the suspect, George Jones, 36, through windows as he darted into the apartment he shared with his girlfriend. They knocked on his door and waited for him on a landing between two flights of stairs, Larkin said.
Jones came out with his hands at his sides, then shot at the officers with a .380-caliber handgun. One bullet struck Crosby, 30, in the left shoulder, resting in his spine. Lewis returned fire, striking Jones, who fell down the stairs. Jones has been charged with assault, two counts of armed criminal action, domestic assault and resisting arrest. He is in custody at an area hospital with bail set at $150,000.
