JERSEY CITY, N.J. — At a news conference outside the Jersey City Medical Center this afternoon, Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey said the miracle the city was waiting for isn’t coming.
Officer Marc Anthony DiNardo, the most seriously injured of five cops shot on Thursday morning, is expected to die. The husband and father of three young children is being visited by family members for a final farewell, and his organs will be harvested.
He was promoted to detective after the shooting, officials said.
Here is the statement read by a fellow officer, Melissa Bartholomew, at the news conference:
The DiNardo family would like to thank members of Jersey City Police Department and people of Jersey City for their prayers and overwhelming support during this difficult time. Marc loved the Jersey City Police Department and City of Jersey City. He was proud to follow his father’s footsteps in public service. He took joy helping those in need, taking care of the injured and saving lives.
Marc was not a selfish man; he was a moral man, a man who gave of himself to those who could not care for themselves. Marc gave his life so others could live by donating organs. He is a true hero.
