SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The state police director for the San Juan region was charged Wednesday with domestic violence after his wife, a police sergeant, filed a complaint alleging psychological abuse, justice officials said.
Lt. Col. Juan Sergio Rubin posted a $1,000 bond and was scheduled for a preliminary court hearing May 11, the Puerto Rican Justice Department said in a statement.
Rubin’s attorneys told reporters that he is innocent and that they will fight the accusations. Attorney Antonio Figueroa claimed that Rubin’s wife, whom justice officials identified as Nora Ramos, filed the complaint two years after she was allegedly abused.
“This is a very weak case,” Figueroa said.
Police Chief Jose Figueroa Sancha did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment on the attorney’s claim. He told Notiuno radio station that both Rubin and his wife have been stripped of their weapons, along with another female police officer who he said is involved in the case.
“Everybody has to face the system, regardless of who they are,” Figueroa Sancha said. “Sergio Rubin has been a tremendous officer.”
Figueroa said the police department also has launched its own investigation into the alleged domestic abuse.
The charge against Rubin comes just weeks after longtime San Juan Police Commissioner Hilton Cordero resigned amid sexual assault and child pornography charges.
