BOSCAWEN, N.H. — Posts on social media by a nonprofit K-9 state trooper support organization suggest an actual case of “man bites dog” occurred in Boscawen Sunday, when a K-9 officer was bit by a male refusing to exit a trailer where police were investigating a possible shooting.
State and local police responded to reports of a possible shooting on Corn Hill Road in Boscawen Sunday afternoon. Around 3:13 p.m., Boscawen police posted a warning on the department’s Facebook page stating, “There is going to be a significant police presence at 1 Corn Hill Road. Please avoid the area.”
Three people were in police custody Monday in connection with the shooting, though Boscawen Police Chief Kevin Wyman did not release any names of those involved, or return calls seeking information on whether anyone is facing charges in connection with the incident.
One person was transported from the area with a reported gunshot wound.
According to information provided by the New Hampshire Canine Trooper’s Association (NHCTA), a nonprofit that provides financial assistance and recognition to certified New Hampshire State Police canine teams, State Trooper Daniel Livingstone and K-9 Veda, along with other troopers from the New Hampshire State Police Troop D, responded to Corn Hill Road to assist Boscawen police with their investigation of the reported shooting.
As police worked to secure the scene, officers determined someone was holed up in a trailer located in the back of the property. According to the NHCTA, the man ignored commands from police and the homeowner to come out. After the homeowner gained entry to the locked trailer by breaking a glass door, the man inside continued to ignore troopers’ commands to surrender, a social media post by the NHCTA reports.
Trooper Livingstone deployed K-9 Veda into the trailer, who quickly located and apprehended the man, who was trying to conceal himself under a pile of clothes. According to the NHCTA, the man began kicking and punching K-9 Veda and on-scene troopers, and at one point during the struggle put K-9 Veda in a chokehold and bit her in the head.
State troopers eventually took the man, whose name was not released, into custody.
According to the NHCTA, the man who bit Veda faces several charges, including resisting arrest, interference with a police dog, and assault on a police officer, along with an outstanding warrant.
K-9 Veda was cleared medically and is “okay”, reports the NHCTA.
Wyman could not be reached for comment on the NHCTA’s social media account of the shooting investigation.
