BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — At least six people were shot, one fatally, when gunfire broke out in an Alabama park “full of families” on Easter Sunday, police said.

Victims ranged in age from 32 to 4, Birmingham police said. A 32-year-old woman, a bystander, died in the backseat of a car.

Five injured people were hospitalized in stable condition, with police saying they were aged 21, 17, 16, 15 and 4, reported WVTM-TV.

Police said they had no suspects and were asking for the public’s help in gathering information for what is now a homicide investigation. Police said “multiple victims have arrived at local hospitals” with apparent gunshot wounds.

“At approximately 7 p.m. our officers responded to Patton Park while hundreds of people were in the park gathered on this Easter Sunday,” a police spokesman told reporters at the scene. “There were several shots fired.”

Preliminary investigation indicated that an “incident or altercation amongst a group of males occurred in the park, which led to several shots being fired,” the spokesman said, urging people to come forward with information.

“This park was full of people, full of families, and we know people saw things today,” police said. “This was a park full of people. There were several children in the park tonight.”
