San Francisco sheriff unknowingly drove with suspended license

His license has been suspended since February when he failed to report a minor car accident to DMV

SAN FRANCISCO — A spokesman says the San Francisco sheriff has been unknowingly driving with a suspended license since February after failing to properly report a minor car accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Kenya Briggs, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department, said in a statement Monday that Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi and his personal insurance provider were not notified by the DMV about the license suspension.

Mirkarimi was involved in the non-injury accident on Oct. 2. There was no damage to his city-owned car. The other vehicle was damaged.

A statement from Mirkarimi’s office says there was no city insurance information in the car and he exchanged personal insurance information with the other driver.

Briggs says Mirkarimi is working to resolve the matter and has been permitted to drive to work.
