OAKLAND, Calif. — A burned body was found after two Alameda County sheriff’s deputies serving an eviction notice were injured in an explosion, CBS SF reported.
Deputies were in process of entering an apartment building when there was an explosion in the upper back level of the two-story building, Sgt. J.D. Nelson told the publication.
Sgt. Nelson told KCBS radio that firefighters discovered a severely-burned corpse that may have been the target of the eviction.
“We are in the process of figuring out exactly what happened, if he was deceased prior to the deputies getting there or if he’s deceased by intentionally igniting that explosion as the deputies went to go in the home,” Nelson said to KCBS.
When deputies arrived, they found a key had been broken inside the lock of the front door. A locksmith had been brought in and the explosion occurred while he drilled into the lock.
Both officers were hospitalized with minor injuries and one suffered a concussion.
The identity of the body has not been confirmed, nor have the identities of the officers been released.
