SYLACAUGA, Ala. — A Sylacauga police officer was thrown from a suspect’s vehicle and run over during a weekend traffic stop.
Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson provided this account of what happened:
On Saturday, the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of East Second Street and North Main Avenue.
The officer tried to take the driver, 43-year-old Corie Darius Burns, into custody. Burns resisted and a struggle ensued.
“The arresting officer found himself inside of the vehicle that Burns was driving,’’ Johnson said. “Burns was able to get the vehicle into drive and started driving away at a very high rate of speed.”
The officer was thrown from the vehicle and run over. The officer was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center with broken bones to his left arm, left elbow and left ankle where the vehicle ran over his sarm and leg, Johnson said.
He was treated and released but will be off the job for an extended period of time.
Other officers chased Burns to the end of South Main Avenue at Goodwater Highway where ehe crashed into a tree and was taken into custody.
Burns is charged with second-degree assault and first-degree possession of marijuana.
He is being held in the Talladega County Jail with bond set at $75,000.
