YUBA CITY, Calif. — An officer and a woman were shot early Tuesday morning in Yuba City when a gun the woman had fired as officers tried to help her up.
The injuries occurred after a Yuba City police response to a domestic violence call at 1:19 a.m. Tuesday on Melton Drive, according to department spokeswoman Shawna Pavey.
When officers arrived, they spoke to a woman involved in the call, but the man had left the scene. As police continued to look in the area for the man, they came upon another couple at 2:27 a.m. standing in the middle of the roadway on Winslow Drive.
Officers stopped to speak with them to find out why they were out so late on the cold night.
As they walked toward them, the woman backed up and crouched near the curb. Her movement was not necessarily suspicious and could have been interpreted as a reaction to the cold temperature, Pavey said.
The man was cooperative during a conversation with officers. When the officers turned their attention to the woman, she refused to stand.
“As the officers tried to get her into a standing position to talk to her, to find out what she is doing out there at 2:27 in the morning, a shot goes off, hitting her and the officer,” said Pavey.
No officers had their weapons drawn and the gunshot was fired from a weapon in possession of the woman, Pavey said.
The officer was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and the woman was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville. Both had non life-threatening injuries.
