SPRINGFILED, Mass. — A man accused of being armed with a knife and attempting to disarm an officer during an altercation over the weekend is facing several charges, police said.

Vilmanuel Mulero-Vazquez, 32, of Springfield, was arrested just after midnight on Sunday morning after getting into a physical altercation with a police officer, where he allegedly bit police and attempted to grab the officer’s gun, according to Springfield police spokesperson Ryan Walsh.

The incident began when an officer entered the Pride store at the East Columbus location and witnessed Mulero-Vazquez in an altercation with the store’s clerk after allegedly attempting to steal items from the store.

“The officer attempted to intervene when Mulero-Vazquez pushed him and then began hitting the officer in the face with a closed fist,” Walsh wrote. “While the officer attempted to take the suspect into custody Mulero-Vazquez bit the officer in the arm and then attempted to grab the officer’s service pistol from the holster.”

More officers arrived on the scene and arrested Mulero-Vazquez, who is charged with armed robbery, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and trespassing, as we was already barred from going to the Pride store, police said.
