HERMANTOWN, Minn. — The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday night identified a man who was shot dead by authorities Saturday afternoon in Hermantown.
Timothy Russell Majchrzak, 37, of Hermantown, died of multiple gunshot wounds, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
According to a Saturday news release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, two Hermantown police officers and a St. Louis County sheriff’s deputy pursued a motorcyclist through Hermantown Saturday at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour before calling off their pursuit.
St. Louis County sheriff’s deputies spotted the motorcyclist a short time later near Stebner Road and Village Drive, the BCA said. The motorcycle became stuck after a short pursuit and he attempted to flee on foot. At one point during the encounter shots were fired. At another point the subject was struck by a squad car, according to the news release.
St. Louis County and Hermantown law enforcement personnel provided medical aid but Majchrzak was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The BCA reportedly recovered a gun at the scene, and investigators will determine whether squad cameras captured the incident. Law enforcement were not wearing body cameras, according to the news release. The Duluth Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol provided assistance securing the scene.
The BCA said additional information, including the names of the deputies involved, will be provided once the initial round of interviews is complete.
The BCA is conducting the investigation at the request of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. When the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings without recommendation to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
