SAYREVILLE — An officer who was found shot to death outside of a movie theater was a highly decoreated nine-year veteran who was just promoted to detective, NJ.com reported.
Off-duty Detective Matt Kurtz, 34, was found dead outside of a cinema Monday morning in his personal vehicle, the Sayreville Police Department told the news site.
“We lost a very good and fine young police officer today. And our hearts and our prayers are with him, his parents, his wife, and his children,” Mayor Kennedy O’Brien told the publication.
Kurtz was promoted to the Investigation Division last November. He has been honored for saving an 83-year-old man from a burning house in December 2014.
The prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation into the officer’s death. The cause of death was not yet known. Police have not said whether they are searching for a suspect.
