CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston police officer was shot at Charleston Area Medical Center on Saturday after an inmate being treated overpowered a Montgomery police officer guarding him and tried to escape, apprehending his gun in an altercation, police say.
The suspect, Brian Ogle, and the officer got into an altercation in a stairway leading to an alley behind the hospital when Ogle shot at Charleston Police Department officers who responded to the scene and were attempting to help the police officer from Montgomery.
The Charleston officer shot is alive and alert and currently receiving treatment at CAMC, according to Lt. Autumn Davis, public affairs officer for Charleston Police Department.
Police did not release the name of the officer that was shot.

CPD officers apprehended Ogle before he could escape, according to Davis. He is currently at CAMC receiving treatment, and Davis said CPD is consulting with the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office to determine what charges he could be facing, including a possible charge for attempted murder.
Ogle was arrested earlier this week by Montgomery Police Department officers for crimes committed in Tennessee, Davis said. Ogle was being treated at CAMC for injuries sustained in the incident that led to his initial arrest four days ago, when he tried to escape on Saturday, she said.
Montgomery police were guarding Ogle at the time of his attempted escape.
In November, a Charleston police officer was shot in the chest in the Westmoreland Drive area of Charleston while responding to an apparent home invasion. The officer, Patrolman Seth Johnson, was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, and returned fire and killed the man who allegedly shot him.
