HARRISON COUNTY, W.Va. — After a Harrison County man shot and killed himself Friday, the bullet went through an apartment wall and hit the Anmoore police chief, police say.

Chief Don Quinn was struck in the elbow. He was treated and released from United Hospital Center in Bridgeport on Friday afternoon, according to a release from Lt. Michael Baylous of the West Virginia State Police.

At about 2 p.m., Quinn was dispatched by the Harrison-Taylor 911 Center to a domestic related incident at an apartment complex on Trovato Street, near W.Va. 58, in Anmoore. A woman who lived in the apartment had called police during a verbal argument with her boyfriend, who also lived there, according to Cpl. S.D. Swiger of the State Police detachment in Bridgeport.

Police say that Quinn knocked on the apartment door and announced himself. The door of the apartment was slightly opened and then quickly shut by a man inside the apartment, the release says.

Police believe that the man, who was about 18, then shot himself in the head with a rifle, resulting in the bullet passing through the apartment wall and striking Quinn in the elbow.

Quinn, believing that the suspect was shooting at him, shot back through the apartment wall, according to Swiger.

The teenager died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Swiger said. He was not identified by police Friday. Family had been notified as of Friday evening, but police were waiting on confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The release said the identity of the woman involved in the domestic incident would not be released. Baylous said in the release that “she was not seriously injured.”

Police are not aware of any previous domestic violence incidents at the home.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene.
