COLUMBUS, Ohio – A dramatic scene that played out Friday along a busy Ohio freeway ended with a suspect in custody and cop cars riddled with bullet holes.

Police responded to the area after multiple 911 callers said a pedestrian was firing shots at passing cars, WBNS reported. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the incident began after a man got out of a car on the northbound lane.

Video taken from a passing vehicle shows a man running along the highway and firing at police cars. Officers returned fire as the gunman continued to run.

The suspect was ultimately taken into custody in critical but stable condition, according to the report. A female occupant of the suspect’s car was also taken into custody for questioning, reported the Columbus Dispatch. No officers were seriously injured but multiple police vehicles were damaged.

The shooting caused lane closures and heavy congestion along the highway for some time. The investigation is ongoing.
