COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. — Dash cam video has been released of the 2014 shooting of a suspect who pulled a pistol on an officer upon exiting her vehicle.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Officer Greg Thinnes attempted a traffic stop in August 2014 after clocking 44-year-old Melissa Alexander going 60 mph in a 35 zone. Alexander refused to stop, resulting in a pursuit that ended after the two vehicles arrived at a dead end.
Thinnes ordered Alexander to show her hands multiple times before she abruptly exited the car with a loaded .380-caliber pistol.
The officer fired at Alexander six times — hitting her twice in the torso, according to the report. Despite being struck, Alexander attempted to raise her firearm once more before collapsing.
Alexander survived the shooting. On Monday, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity of attempted capital murder of a police officer, among other charges. She is currently being held as she undergoes further mental health evaluation.
