WASHINGTON — A police SUV hit an elderly man as he attempted to cross the street, WUSA9 reported.
The Oct. 12 incident occurred when the man attempted to cross on red, witnesses told the publication. Another witness told WUSA9 the officer had his lights on.
“The officer made an evasive maneuver to try and avoid the pedestrian and it appears, preliminarily, it appears that he sideswiped the mirror with the pedestrian, knocked the pedestrian down. And the officer’s scout car, the police car went up on the median and came to rest on the median,” Lt. Ronald Wilkins said to the news site.
Police would not comment on the officer’s speed. The officer was injured after the vehicle hit a median. He was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The pedestrian was also taken to the hospital with critical injuries and was listed in serious condition Monday evening. His name has not been released.
The incident is still under investigation.
