NEW YORK — New York City police officers will have to wait a little longer to go on holiday.

According to CBS New York, the NYPD has canceled all scheduled days off for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The directive is due to staffing shortages related to COVID-19. All uniformed officers who were scheduled for vacation must now report to work.

“In order to provide police coverage for New Year’s celebrations in Times Square and for precincts throughout the city, the NYPD has ordered all uniformed members of the service who would regularly be off to report for duty,” an NYPD spokesperson told Fox News on Wednesday.

According to Fox News, about 16% of the force or 6,000 officers called out sick this week.
