PITTSBURGH — Edgewood police investigate an early morning crash that sent a police officer and another driver to a hospital with minor injuries.

Edgewood police Chief Robert Payne said a man, whom authorities identified as 38 years old from the Swissvale area, stole his ex-girlfriend’s car after an argument in her Swissvale apartment. The man was traveling at a high rate of speed in the 200 block of Maple Avenue about 2:30 a.m. when he hit a parked vehicle, Payne said.

Officer Ryan Kempert, 31, was traveling toward the man when the crash occurred, and the impact spun the man’s car into Kempert’s cruiser, Payne said. Kempert and the driver, whom police suspected of being intoxicated, were taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland with minor injuries, Payne said.

Allegheny County police likely will file charges against the man today, homicide Lt. Bill Palmer said. He would specify what those charges were.
