WALDO, Fla. — The former police chief of a tiny north Florida town known as an infamous speed trap has been cleared of wrongdoing by a state commission after officers accused him of setting a ticket quota and acting unethically.
The Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission made the ruling in the case of former Chief Mike Szabo, whose officers had also accused him of recording their conversations.
After the infighting became public, the small police department was closed down on Oct. 1.
The Gainesville Sun reports that Waldo’s police budget had been largely supported by ticket quota revenue.
The commission found that Szabo violated no moral character standards, a finding that will allow him to continue working in law enforcement.
