When carrying your pens for note taking, don’t clip the pens in the pocket so they stick up... this leaves them accessible to everyone. In a close in struggle, a suspect could grab them and use them to stab you in the face.... it has happened to officers. Instead, let the pen disappear all the way in; when you need it, just push it up fromt the bottom throught the pocket. As it clears the top of the pocket, now you can grab onto it for use.
