SALEM, Mass. — State police and SWAT officers found a man dead from a self-inflicted wound after a nearly six-hour standoff Saturday that began with multiple explosions.

The Boston Herald reports police arrived at the Salem apartment building after receiving reports of explosions being heard.

“We backed up, called police, and four or five more explosions had gone off before they arrived,” neighbor Fred Shambaugh told the Salem News.

A man, identified as 49-year-old George Sprague, threw makeshift explosives out of his barricaded apartment after reportedly being angered over the loss of his job and subsequent eviction notice, according to the Salem News.

A device was thrown at police as they approached the residence, but it did not go off.

After the standoff came near its sixth hour and negotiators failed to make contact with Sprague, SWAT officers entered the building, where the suspect was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound.

The makeshift devices caused property damage, but no one was injured and no shots were fired in the incident, according to the report.
