NEW ORLEANS - Dozens of New Orleans police officers swarmed an Algiers neighborhood Monday looking for three men who fled from a traffic stop carrying an assault rifle.
The incident began shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Shepard Court, said Officer Sabrina Richardson, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department. Police were following the vehicle when the driver began to drive erratically in an attempt to flee, she said.
While officers gave chase, the driver stopped on Shirley Drive, where all three suspects fled the car. Richardson said that one of the men carried an assault rifle.
An unidentified officer chased the suspect carrying the assault rifle through several backyards, when he turned near 1629 Shirley Drive and pointed his weapon at the officer. The officer fired two shots at the man, missing him, and the suspect continued to flee. He was later apprehended by police dogs, and suffered some injuries during his arrest. The others were still being sought around 3 p.m.
Police blocked off several blocks of Shirley Drive during their search and had not located the gun by midafternoon. No officers were injured.
Police have not released the suspects’ names. Richardson said their vehicle was stolen in a carjacking in Algiers earlier this week.
