EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — A man is facing multiple attempted murder charges after authorities say he intentionally triggered an explosion that injured five law enforcement officers during a response to a family disturbance, KKTV reported.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to assist Monument Police on May 17, after a man had reportedly exhibited a history of troubling behavior. During the incident, deputies said the man attempted to light another person on fire, prompting first responders to evacuate the home.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect then barricaded himself inside the residence. As two Monument police officers and three El Paso County deputies attempted to gain entry, they reported smelling a strong odor, followed by an explosion that injured all five officers. Authorities believe the blast was set intentionally.

The injured personnel were transported to local hospitals and later released, according to the report. The suspect was also hospitalized with burns and is now in custody.

He is facing multiple charges, including five counts of attempted homicide of a peace officer, three counts of attempted homicide, first-degree arson and attempted first-degree arson.

Sheriff Joseph Roybal credited the quick actions of first responders and condemned the violence.

“I am incredibly thankful members of law enforcement were not seriously injured during this incident,” the sheriff said in a press release. “Criminals like [the suspect] do not belong in our communities, and I am grateful he is in the custody of my deputies. Thank you to our collaborating partners at the local and federal levels for assisting us in this investigation and ensuring justice for everyone harmed by this troubling act of violence.”

The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing. Assisting agencies include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Colorado Springs Police Department Regional Explosives Unit and the Metro Crime Lab.
