ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A police officer shot twice late Tuesday night during a foot chase with a robbery suspect was in critical condition Wednesday following more than nine hours of emergency surgery, officials said.
Lt. John Finn was shot in the leg and back after responding with another officer to a report of an armed robbery at a city convenience store around 11:15 p.m., police said.
Keyshawn Everett shot Finn while being chased by police through the streets of Albany’s South End neighborhood, Detective James Miller said. Officers then returned fire and wounded Everett, Miller said.
Both Finn and Everett underwent surgery at the Albany Medical Center, said hospital spokeswoman Wenda Howard. Everett also was listed in critical condition.
The last time an Albany officer was shot by a suspect in the line of duty was on Nov. 13, 1999 when Tracy Grady shot two officers trying to question him about a domestic dispute. Grady was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in August 2001 for attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of officers Thomas Shea and Stanley Nadoraski. Both men recovered from their injuries.
