DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Two officers with the Lexington Police Department were treated and released Monday night from Lexington Memorial Hospital after a scuffle with an alleged gunmen, his brother and an unruly crowd.
Although the officers names were not released, Lexington Police Department Capt. Jimmy Truell said they were responding to the Eastview Terrace housing projects in pursuit of Tyrone Clifford Carr.
Carr, 24, was reported as firing shots into the trunk of a car in the Bass Food Mart parking lot around 2 p.m. that afternoon. Three small children were sitting in the back seat as their mother was walking back to the car. No one was injured and police say there does not appear to be a link between the shooter, the woman or her children.
“She just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Truell said.
A crowd of more than 20 people became hostile at the apartment complex as officers came to arrest Carr later that evening. According to Truell, Carr bit one of the arresting officers in the back before being subdued. The other officer received scrapes and bruises during the scuffle.
The shooter’s brother, Tony Omar Carr, 30, also was charged with resisting, obstruction and delaying arrest as he joined in the fi ght. He is currently in jail under a $500 secured bond.
As the crowd began to close in, Truell said an additional eight police officers responded to the scene after a call for back-up was made.
“The officers did a great job with crowd management,” he said.
Truell added that the officers were able to successfully disperse the crowd before the situation was able to escalate, and the injured officers were able to make both arrests and book the suspects at the station before going to the hospital to treat their wounds. He also said more arrests likely will be made after an investigation is conducted involving members of the crowd.
Carr currently is being held under a $150,000 secured bond for, among other things, discharging a firearm into occupied property, discharging a firearm in the city limits, injury to personal property, assault on a government official and resisting arrest.
Truell said as of Tuesday night, police do not know what Carr -- who does have a previous arrest record -- was initially shooting at or why.
