WASHINGTON (AP) -- A U.S. Capitol Police officer was hit by a car Wednesday, sparking a lengthy chase which ended at the District of Columbia’s border with Prince George’s County, Md.
Authorities said two officers attempted to make a routine traffic stop at a Southeast Washington facility which handles deliveries for the U.S. Capitol. However, the car passed the first officer, then hit the second, and prompted other officers to give chase.
“The pursuit went over the South Capitol Street Bridge, to (Interstate) 295, down 295 to Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast, and ended on Southern Avenue and Pennsylvania” where the car crashed into another police car, said U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Jessica Gissubel.
Three people inside the car were taken into custody. Charges were pending. A toddler was also found in the car, uninjured, and Gissubel said the child was with a guardian.
The officer who was hit suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Another officer at the crash scene was scraped in the arm by glass.
