DENVER (AP) - An elderly woman was killed Saturday as suspects in a stolen SUV fled the shooting of an off-duty police officer on Interstate 70.

Two men were arrested following a brief foot-chase near the scene of the crash that killed the woman in a northwest Denver neighborhood, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Interstate 70 was shut down for hours and police went door-to-door searching for possible additional suspects.

Jackson said he did not know if there were more suspects.

A uniformed officer was driving his own car on Interstate 70 when he was shot in the arm at about 10:30 a.m. The officer, who was heading to an off-duty job, tried to follow the SUV but lost the vehicle.

Soon after, the SUV broadsided a Subaru on the passenger side. The woman passenger was killed and an elderly man was hospitalized.

The officer taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he was treated for the gunshot wound and other minor injuries caused by glass fragments and released.

Jackson did not know the injured elderly man’s condition, nor did he release the names of the man, woman or officer involved.

The SUV had been stolen in Colorado but had California license plates.
