CHICAGO, Ill.-- Federal officials indicted a former police chief and four others for allegedly embezzling more than $75,000 from the town of Cicero, a corruption-plagued Chicago suburb.
Agents rounded up some of the suspects Friday, a day after a grand jury returned a 12-count indictment charging them with conspiracy, money laundering and obstruction of tax collection over nearly three years beginning in October 1995.
Former police chief Emil Schullo, 54; Michael A. Spano Sr., 60; Gregory Ross, 54; a former Internal Revenue Service criminal investigation supervisor; Peter Volpe, 40, a former police detective currently serving a prison sentence on an unrelated charge; and James Inendino, 58, were named in the indictment.
