Medical Examiner Rules Man Died While in Dallas Police Custody

DALLAS (AP) -- A 25-year-old man who scuffled with arresting officers before being taken into custody died of asphyxia, the medical examiner’s office ruled.

Allen Simpson died just after midnight Dec. 29 at Baylor University Medical Center from asphyxia caused by neck compression, the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday.

The police department did not release the names of the officers who were involved.

Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Chris Gilliam said they are on nonpatrol assignment as the department continues investigating policy violations or other criminal wrongdoing.

A police report said officers were called about 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 28 to an area where drug activity had been reported in Pleasant Grove. Officers spotted the car at an intersection and tried to pull it over but the driver accelerated.

Police say they pursued the car and Simpson stopped, jumped out and ran away.

A foot chase ensued and Simpson fell down in a driveway. The offices said they “immediately pushed (him) to prevent him from regaining his balance,” the report said. The report said Simpson then began kicking and scratching officers. According to the report, Simpson appeared to pass out during the struggle and was handcuffed.

Officers called an ambulance and he was taken to Baylor.

Results of drug tests were not released Wednesday.
