CHINO, Calif. (AP) -- Police shot and killed a man who fired several rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle in front of his home and then allegedly pointed the rifle at the officers, authorities said.

Police responded to reports of shots fired around 4 p.m. Sunday and yelled for the man to drop his weapon before they fired at him, police Lt. Russ Calverley said.

The man was taken by ambulance to Chino Valley Medical Center and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No one else was injured in the shootings, Calverley said.

Law enforcement officials were withholding the suspect’s name pending notification of his family.

“With his actions he left little choice,” said police Lt. Michael Johnson, who said the man may have been suicidal.

Three AK-47 magazines were found on the ground at the scene of the shooting, but it was unclear if their ammunition had been spent.

Police had received information that the man and his wife recently had separated, Calverley said.

Neighbor Curt Butler said he was driving down the street when he saw the suspect sitting on the sidewalk in front of his home with the rifle.

“He told me ‘Hey neighbor, get in your house.’ I ignored him the first time. He said it again pointing the gun,” Butler said.
