They later learned that the 200-pound pig, named Pumba, escaped from his home on a nearby farm after a small child left the gate open. Pumba was returned home to its owner a short time after he was taken into custody.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Police officers have once again captured an animal on the loose in New Jersey.

First, it was a bull that was captured after running through Newark Penn Station in December. And, now cops had to track down a 200-pound pig in Washington Township, Gloucester County.

On Friday, a bystander called township police after a pig was seen near the corner of Egg Harbor Road and County House Road.

Washington Township police officers Frank Cicalese and Victor Rossi got the call.

The two officers chased after the pig, Cicalese tackled it and the officers were able to safely tie the animal up, according to a post on the Washington Township Police Department Facebook page.

“It wasn’t the typical day on the job to say the least,” Cicalese told 6ABC Action News. He joked that pig tackling is not something they teach in the police academy, so he drew on his days as a high school linebacker and imagined the pig was a running back.

“It was a change,” Rossi told the news station. “We deal with some unsettling things in this job, and I think it was fun.”
