Man in Ohio hospital disarms officer, fatally shoots self

Youngstown Police are investigating how the man was able to disarm the Mercy Health officer; the man succumbed to his self-inflicted wound

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio —A person inside a hospital took a Mercy Health Police officer’s gun and fatally shot themselves with it, WMFJ reported.

The Aug. 28 incident occurred when the officer was performing routine check of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital’s emergency room, according to the report. A 33-year-old man was able to get control of the officer’s gun and used it to inflict a self-harming wound.

The man succumbed to the wound despite immediate efforts to save his life. The Youngstown Police Department is investigating the disarming of the officer, according to the report.

Mercy Health reported that the incident was isolated and did not cause danger to the public or patients.
